While Louisa's ring finger of her left hand is bare, she does wear a peridot ring on her middle finger and a diamond ring on her little finger.  The peridot symbolizes the birth month (august) of King Louis XVI of France, for whom Louisville was named.  The diamond for april, represents the birth month of President Thomas Jefferson, for whom Jefferson County was named.  Looking closer at the bench design beside her hand, the letters MMIII can be seen.  MMIII is the roman numeral for 2003, a significant year in Louisville history when the city and county merged into one metropolitan government.  Louisa's ring finger stays bare to honor the marriage of the two governments into one.
